In an effort to stem what's being referred to as e-waste, a coalition formed by eBay is looking to improve disposal options for obsolete computers.
eBay has partnered with several corporations and environmentalists to find better methods of old computer removal. Because of the toxic contents of some computer components, current options can place the environment at risk. To assist this program, eBay has launched its Rethink Initiative, a site where owners can sell, donate, or recycle their computer.
As reported by TechNewsWorld:
"…the program is a significant step for the tech industry, which has ignored the problem of disposing of toxic computer parts for years, says Ted Smith, senior strategist for the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition.
"There is a growing awareness of the magnitude of the problem, and we'd rather have an industry-driven solution than a government one," Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Latest News about Intel CEO Craig Barrett says. The No. 1 chipmaker will help create advertising campaigns promoting reuse and recycling of computers. "EBay is a powerful way to spread the message" to its 125 million users, Barrett says."
With an estimated 133,000 PCs disposed of each day, programs like this are necessary, and in some views, a long time coming.
