Bendi Goes Native In China By
David Utter
Local search comes to China, as Google launches an entry into an already competitive
market for business lookups.
Baidu and two other local search providers, Sina and Sogou, now have another competitor
in that market. Google has debuted the Google
Bendi local search engine in China. Bendi is a word for "native" in a couple
of Chinese dialects, according to Search Engine Journal.
The new service offers what many industry observers believe will be the big growth
area for search engines. Users of the local search can find information on businesses
and related web pages for over 100 cities in China.
Google has partnered with the online map company Mapabc to provide maps for about
70 cities, a report for People's Daily Online notes. Further, Google has partnered
with an undetermined number of yellow page providers on Bendi.
Google and other search rivals have been working to gain market share among China's
Internet users, 100 million of them and growing. The company has been embroiled
in a court battle with Microsoft over the hiring of a Redmond executive to helm
the Chinese operations. About the Author:
